“I was visiting the other day and they had a concert going on in the main open area,” says Rick McDonnell, whose parents-in-law live at The Village of Erin Meadows. “We're starting to see the social activities kick up again…It's really nice to see the residents enjoying things again.” Life at the Village has largely returned to normal with residents now enjoying get-togethers in the pub for beers and baseball. Recent celebrations of Canada’s Day and Father’s Day have also been highlights, along with a trip to the Art Gallery of Mississauga.
Social times in communities across Canada
Those kinds of social events might be the envy of more of us, coming out of the pandemic with guarded uncertainty. Retirement home seniors, though, enjoy daily activity. Take a look at some examples from across the country.
At Country Cottage in Sherwood Park, Alberta, late June saw a visit by animals from the local petting zoo. You can check out their Instagram post on the visit and follow Optima Living to learn more about the activities there. Like other communities in the western provinces, Country Cottage has been able to remain a bit more social throughout the pandemic.
For example, at Evanston Summit in Calgary, ladies visited The Noble Teahouse in High River last summer, a chance to support local rehabilitation programs, also. Last September’s Grandparent’s Day was celebrated there with some four-legged entertainment by a visiting group of show dogs. More recent outings include a trip to PaSu Farms, a working sheep farm that combines a panoramic view of the nearby countryside with fine dining. Another outing took residents to the Rosebud Theatre, a local hidden gem that combines food with live theatre.
The Vineyards in Kelowna, BC, celebrated last Hallowe’en by giving residents a chance to “create, draw and colour” and learn more about each other. More recent highlights include an impromptu horse-racing event – right in the building. At Berwick Retirement Communities throughout the province, they're enjoying outdoor barbecues. Residents are also participating in the torch relay for BC’s 55 Plus Games, beginning at Berwick on the Park in Kamloops.
Father’s Day was also an occasion for happy celebrations across Verve Senior Living communities where residents got together with families to celebrate. At Gilmore Gardens in Richmond, BC, they also celebrated National Indigenous Day June 23rd with a performance by indigenous dancers.
Seniors’ communities across Ontario have been carefully putting pandemic restrictions behind them. Holland Gardens, a Verve Senior Living community in Bradford, Ontario, recently welcomed Frankie Flowers from Breakfast Television. He chatted with residents about indoor and outdoor planting. Earlier this spring, the community celebrated Cruise Week with a Beach party.
In late June, the community of Delmanor Elgin Mills in Richmond Hill celebrated its 20th Anniversary with a get-together of family and friends. Entertainment included live music by the Pepper Shakers, veterans of the Toronto music scene. The same week, Brian Cope, from Pride Toronto gave a presentation on 2SLGBTQ+ community.
Community members from VIVA Retirement Communities took in a Blue Jays’ game in late June, enjoying box seats at Rogers Centre. Community members at Waterside Retirement Community in Carleton Place put on an interactive play, “The Animal House,” also in late June that same week. Like many others, this and other VIVA Communities are now open for tours.
To touch on one more community in a cross-country survey, Lanes Retirement Living in St. John’s Newfoundland has a month end birthday celebration every month. June’s month end party included live music and beers in O’Malley’s Pub onsite. One other recent highlight was a fun sing-along of YMCA by the Village People. Watch the video!
That’s really only a sampling of communities across the country. Here, we really just want to celebrate the many ways retirement homes are making days fun again for their residents. “Fun” may have been sparse over the last couple of years, but it’s a focus at retirement communities to make the most of every day.
Family members love communities' “big social calendars”
Entertainment and the social time that goes along with it is also a boon to family members, who can cast aside so many worries when elderly loved ones move to a retirement home. Joan Irving, whose mom lives at Origin at Longwood in Nanaimo, praises the community’s “big social calendar.” She lists activities like the indoor theatre’s movie nights and barbecues on the patio as some of her mom’s favourites. “It has an incredible pool. If you want to, you can do aquafit… The majority of the people there are widowed women. So she's got a network of new friends.” That aspect alone was a “big improvement” over her mom’s being alone in her own homme, previously.
Fredina Elliot says that since her mom’s move into Aspira Bolton Mills Retirement Living, the biggest thing she’s grateful for is “the social interaction with people her own age.” In a story that’s all too common, “She lived in a home by herself after my dad passed away, and it was far too large for her as a single person.” Family visits didn’t really fill the gap, either, and as Fredina admits, “I think she felt quite lonely. The day is very long for an individual that's just sitting, watching TV, maybe talking on the phone for a few minutes here and there.” Since moving in to Bolton Mills, “suddenly there was a community for her.” She joins in the community’s physical fitness activities and also participates in the physio program. Fredina is thrilled with the effect “the positive environment” has had on her mom. “We, as family members, know what activities are being planned every single day, every single week, every single month, and we know those activities that our mom participates in.”
At Lake Bonavista Village in Calgary, Darlene Kadonga’s mom lights up at the community’s entertainment nights. “She gets right into it and yells out requests,” Darlene laughs. “We'll be in the dining room with entertainment, and I'll be with her, and we'll actually get up and she'll hold on to a walker and do her little dance steps, and I'll dance with her.”
Dancing together, surrounded by friends in a happy social setting, might sound like only a memory to some seniors living alone. That sort of thing happens regularly in retirement homes, though, where people are making great new memories. All you have to do to witness this for yourslf is to tour local retirement homes and join in the fun yourself!
