Our Perspective

How we see OPAL Vancouver

OPAL represents an exciting new vision in senior care, offering superior senior living, with an upscale modern design and up-to-the minute technology, in an intergenerational living environment. This building, the flagship of Element Lifestyle Retirement Inc., has excited us here at Comfort Life, since we first heard about it in 2016.

Opened in June 2020, OPAL by Element incorporates all of the best elements of contemporary senior living. Amenities and services include chef-prepared meals, an onsite spa and beauty salon, an interior pub, rooftop patios, and an ongoing list of other features. The design includes 30,000 square feet of very unique innovations indoor and outdoor. These include a rock salt wall for yoga exercises and tai chi, a full-service wellness spa for daily rejuvenation, and an interior IT centre. Versatile care staff and facilities provide a complete continuum of care, from independent living to memory care and long term care.

For all those impressive features, the front and centre attraction here is dining and culinary features. OPAL offers an in-house program where residents can engage in cooking classes taught by the executive chef onsite. There will also be a communal table for dining with larger groups of friends, as well as private dining and living rooms. The variety of authentic cuisine ranges from ethnic dishes like aburi sashimi and sushi, to a menu of locally supplied farm-to table foods. In addition to the great food, there are wine tastings, a water bar with fruit and herb infusions, and a High Tea Service.

Community’s Perspective

How OPAL Vancouver sees itself

Who are you as a community?

A boutique residence in Vancouver’s west side. Amenities and services are designed with the understanding that this is your home. Our daily activities will connect all generations to interact meaningfully. From the details of the design to the ambience created from the attitude of our staff, you’ll experience attentiveness, warmth and intimacy. OPAL provides a complete continuum of lifestyles, from independent living to complex care. We care about your peace of mind.

  • Opened in: 2019
  • Ownership: Private.
  • Languages Spoken: Chinese-Cantonese, Chinese-Mandarin, English, German, Japanese, Spanish

What do you do differently or uniquely well?

The OPAL lifestyle offers our community the possibility of prolonging their independence and aging in place. Our modern, bright and resort-like ambience creates a sense "vacation" everyday. And the warmth and care of our Team provides our residents with a wonderful, comfortable and safe environment in which they can thrive.

What supports do you offer residents as they adjust to life there?

Our 24-hour Concierge team is available to assist residents with move-in coordination. Additionally, our diverse and welcoming community is dedicated to ensuring that new residents feel at home from Day 1.

How are residents supported if their needs change?

At Opal, we offer a continuum of care, allowing independent living residents to transition smoothly to our long-term care floor when needed. Independent living residents can also participate in activities on the long-term care floor, (if space and availability permits) to gain insight into day-to-day life there.

Additionally, outside support can be arranged. Families or residents are encouraged to schedule any external assistance during their time in independent living, especially during challenging days. Your comfort and well-being are our top priorities.

Under what conditions would you advise someone against choosing your community?

At Opal's long-term care floor, we are unable to accommodate certain situations, including violent or abusive behavior, as well as wandering issues. The safety and well-being of all residents is our highest priority.

What might residents find surprising about your community?

We are renowned for our international cuisine and a large team of talented chefs. As part of our menu, we offer authentic Chinese food everyday, every meal, as well as fresh-made Dim Sum for breakfast. Indulge in 4 courses for lunch and dinner.

Additionally, we manage our own long-term care floor on the second level of our building, providing safe and restricted access for residents requiring dementia and memory care.

How will your community change in the next five years?

Given the success and popularity of our Opal lifestyle in the Vancouver location - at Cambie and West King Edward.
We are excited to announce the development of additional communities. We are building new locations in Victoria and Langley in the coming years to expand our services and better serve seniors in these areas.

Additionally, we are in the process of preparing Opal Day Care for children, as part of our commitment to intergenerational connection. Stay tuned for more information on how this initiative unfolds!

What five facts about your community should people know?

1.Opal features its own long-term care floor, ensuring that you will receive additional care if needed in the future.

2.We offer authentic Chinese cuisine every day, every meal.

3.We proudly incorporate innovative technology, including robots in our dining room, which helps to distinguish us from other care homes.

4.Our modern, well-maintained building creates a "vacation" vibe for you to enjoy each day.

C. Yu, resident

"I was looking for an intergenerational community with Independent Living and licensed care options for my husband, who needs a licensed care suite, and me. I couldn't find a suitable community until my friend Stanley introduced OPAL to me. OPAL Licensed Care suites have 24-hour registered nurses, a team of healthcare aids, a rehab assistant, onsite physicians, recreation assistants, and an onsite dietician. I love OPAL recreation classes like gym, Zumba, Tai Chi, dance expressions, and bus tours..."

Sophine and Francis Cheung, resident

"I do enjoy the life, the food and all the activities in Opal that's why I put the 5 stars for OPAL. My favorite activities are the exercising events such as dance class and pool. The culinary programs' "food" are the best. I love the Chinese and European style food. Everyday we have different menu that's the best! Every week we have a bus tour for field trip. Opal Recreation take us to many places that I never been before. They are amazing! "
