Our Perspective

How we see The Village of Humber Heights

A hallmark of life at The Village of Humber Heights is the village feeling. This residence is ideal for people who miss the old days when life was simpler, and who love to easily socialize with others. The “town square” includes a library, an indoor café, a general store, a chapel and more, creating a cheerfully vibrant village centre where old friends meet up, chat and visit. The bonus, of course, is the presence of professional care staff.

The availability of a full continuum of care here makes it unique. With everything from independent and assisted living through dementia care and long-term care, you never need to move again. Memory care neighbourhoods are a standout, allowing residents with dementia to receive the best care possible thanks to Schlegel's partnership with the Research Institute for Aging at the University of Waterloo.

The staff here focus on offering resident-centered care and on creating a community that feels a lot like an extended family. That’s built into Schlegel’s mission, thanks to being a family-owned company, with a focus on love above everything else. For example, employees' and volunteers’ reviews highlight a focus on service with humility. That philosophy and attitude create a great place for seniors to live and to thrive.

Community’s Perspective

How The Village of Humber Heights sees itself

Who are you as a community?

The Village of Humber Heights is Etobicoke's unique continuum of care residence featuring Retirement Apartments, Full Service Retirement suites with walk out patios, Assisted Care, Memory Care and Long Term Care, plus our Village Town Square and Main Street. Our residence is designed to build community while serving your personal needs. Our friendly, well trained team, includes 24-hour professional nursing staff. Come and discover why "It Takes a Village to Care".

What do you do differently or uniquely well?

At the Village of Humber Heights, life is organized around Schlegel’s Village model, which emphasizes community, relationships, and meaningful daily living. The design, centered around a Town Square and Main Street, creates natural opportunities for people to connect with neighbours, staff, and visitors throughout the day. Rather than an institution, Humber Heights feels like a small town where people can gather, participate in village life, and easily feel engaged. The focus is not only on care, but on purpose, belonging, and daily quality of life.

What supports do you offer residents as they adjust to life there?

When someone moves in, the transition is supported by both the team and the resident welcoming committee members. Shared meals, warm gathering spaces, and the rhythm of daily village life make it easier for new residents to quickly feel at home in their surroundings. Team members learn residents’ preferences, routines, and interests so new people can feel comfortable and confident. Opportunities to participate in activities, programs, and everyday conversations help residents build connections and quickly develop a sense of belonging within the village.

How are residents supported if their needs change?

One of the strengths of the Village of Humber Heights is the continuum of care available within the same campus. Residents can access a range of supports, including retirement living, assisted living, memory care, and even long-term care. As needs change, care plans can be adjusted so residents continue to receive the appropriate level of support. This approach allows many residents to remain within a familiar environment, surrounded by the people and community they already know, which can make transitions easier for both residents and families. It’s also ideal for couples whose care needs differ.

Under what conditions would you advise someone against choosing your community?

Someone who strongly prefers a private lifestyle or minimal interaction may find a different setting more comfortable. The Village of Humber Heights is designed for seniors who like being part of a vibrant community where shared spaces, activities, and daily interactions are part of everyday life. It’s ideal if you appreciate connection, participation, and the feeling of being part of a neighbourhood where residents, families, and team members interact regularly.

What might residents find surprising about your community?

Many people are surprised by how different the environment feels from what they expect of a traditional seniors’ residence. The Village design, with its Town Square, Main Street, and shared gathering spaces, creates an atmosphere that feels more like a small community than a care setting. The layout naturally encourages conversation, activities, and everyday interactions. This helps people remain socially connected and engaged in village life.

How will your community change in the next five years?

Over the next several years, we’ll continue to strengthen opportunities for residents to remain engaged, connected, and supported as their needs evolve. The focus will remain on helping people age in place, maintaining continuity of relationships and environment whenever possible. Programs, wellness initiatives, and community activities will continue to grow as the village evolves, while the underlying goal remains the same: creating a place where residents feel part of a living community.

What five facts about your community should people know?

• The Village of Humber Heights offers retirement living, assisted care, memory care, and long-term care within one campus.
• The community is built around Schlegel Villages’ Village concept, featuring a Town Square and Main Street.
• Professional support is available 24 hours a day.
• The village is designed to help residents age in place while remaining connected to familiar surroundings.
• Community life emphasizes relationships, meaningful activities, and a strong sense of belonging.

"So impressive to see an outdoor concert this afternoon after I was leaving a visit with a friend. Such a great set of amenities that I'd think of moving here eventually! Well done!"

Judy Fricker, visitor or friend

"The staff were helpful and courteous. When we first walked in, there was entertainment in the lobby. That was a delight to see so many residents enjoying the music and singing along to "Sweet Caroline". A staff person also refrigerated the dessert we brought for Velma, and labelled the plate. That was very thoughtful!"

Chantel Green, family member

"My mother and I attended a tour conducted by Joanne Hernandez. We were both thoroughly impressed with Joanne's knowledge of the facility and residents. We have attended a few tours and always have so many questions. We had no questions after our tour with Joanne! She has the ability to anticipate the needs of her audience, is caring, and radiates positive energy! We left the tour fully informed of the facility and felt the culture at the village of Humber Heights is exactly what our loved one ne..."
