Four reasons to move to independent living

1. An updated, full-featured environment

Many seniors live in a family home purchased many years before. Keeping things up-to-date has become more difficult over time. When you move into an independent living retirement home, you’ll be surprised at how nice it is to have up-to-date features throughout your living space. Perhaps some things seem superfluous (e.g. exercise rooms), but people come to love amenities like that. Communities with easily accessible swimming pools or golf greens, etc. make exercise fun again. Living in community with people with whom you can enjoy all the amenities (like movie theatres, inhouse pubs, etc.) makes all these luxuries better.

2. Security and safety

Calgary retirement homes give seniors and families peace of mind, knowing that there is always someone else around, and the building is always safe and secure. Unfortunately, seniors living on their own are some of the most vulnerable people in our population. In an independent living retirement community run by professionals who care for you daily, this vulnerability is largely a thing of the past.

Communities are designed with optimal accessibility throughout, adding to safety. Widened hallways, well-lit spaces, bathrooms with grab bars and other accessibility features are all part of the environment. Your safety is paramount here.

3. Communal living is the best

The advantages of communal living might be the best held secret of retirement communities. This is something that is missing from many people’s lives, even younger suburban families. Isolation is proven to be unhealthy, and there's something essentially human about living in a group of people, eating communally and simply living together.

That’s just a brief list. Check out our complete look at the advantages of independent living.

4. Be proactive

Many independent seniors like the idea of controlling their destiny. It’s empowering to own the decision rather than delay the move into a seniors’ community until family tells you it’s time to move. Many Calgary independent living communities have a continuum of care that includes senior assisted living. Moving into independent living, you can anticipate future changes in care needs, where you might require assistance with some activities of daily living.

What is the cost of independent living in Calgary?

Here’s a quick overview of rental prices for independent living suites across Calgary retirement homes. Remember that this fee is an umbrella price, covering all your living costs — everything from your grocery bill to property taxes to home maintenance and everything in between. Of course (as noted above), there are many features of these communities that might not currently be a part of your life but which you will come to appreciate.

This table give a range of prices across the city — in survey only. Not all suite sizes are included per area of the city. Check listings above for many more details about rates charged by each community by suite size.
