The short answer? There’s no one right answer, of course. The wrong answer, though, is to live in denial. Start an open conversation within your family. Prepare yourself. When people move on time, they truly enjoy the lifechange. Others who wait often wish they’d done it sooner. Below, we explore how to communicate, tipping points to look out for, and how to make the transition smoothest. |
“I want to stay in my own home.” This is a common wish of seniors, as demonstrated once again in a 2024 National Institute on Aging study revealing that 80% of older Canadians would prefer to age in their own home, while only 3% want to move to a retirement home or long-term care. For many, this entails that they put off thinking about a retirement home for as long as possible.
We get that it—it’s difficult to think about moving and changing, and at least on the surface, the cost seems high. But few people counter that by thinking about the cost of staying in your own home, especially if you’re alone there. How much pain is it causing you to live alone, or in an outdated house? How much could you gain by moving?

“People don’t like to think about moving because they don’t know what the options are,” says Pat Irwin of ElderCare Canada, who has worked for over 20 years assisting families in dealing with aging loved ones. As long as parents remain independent, she says, everyone’s happy. “However, consider this question regularly: What does independence really mean?”
As a loved one’s physical well-being deteriorates—often slowly, but always inevitably—family members can help them out as much as possible. Can you manage the stress and disruption that goes along with that, though? “Families need to observe their loved ones and pay attention to areas where they need help,” says Irwin. “You can hire a cleaning lady or home care to help out, certainly, but there are limits to that.”
Indeed, home care costs can add up quickly. Hiring home care for three hours a day at $60 per hour adds up to $5,400 per month. That’s a near match with some high-end retirement communities, places that offer much more than food and paid companionship.
Taking a proactive approach
Active adult lifestyle communities are one way in which people bypass some of these questions. Communities are tailored to people 55 and older. Many focus on better ways for residents to “age in place,” with on-site health care access, for example. However, these communities tend to be larger and are never focused on the availability of care.
Many people in their ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s know the good life they can have in independent living in a retirement home. “At some point, you know you’re going to have to deal with moving,” Reg has told us. “Why not take it head-on?” That no-bull approach typifies the attitude of many who proactively choose and move into independent living. Reg lived “10 minutes up the road” from Credit River in Mississauga, and thought, “Why not give it a try?”

But for those whose older parents are less willing to move, the challenge is this:
- To understand parents’ needs fully.
- Gently open and maintain the lines of communication.
- Wait for things to fall into place—and hopefully they do, as stress-free as possible.
Approaches to communicating gently
To begin with, you want to be as fully aware of older loved ones’ living situations as possible. As Irwin says,
You really need to know what parents are doing— all day, all week, all month. What’s working for them and what’s not. And when you approach the subject, you have to approach it properly. You only get one chance to start this conversation, so you should start it off on the right foot.
Irwin suggests starting in the calmest setting possible, when everyone is relaxed—playing a game of cards, for example. Speak as objectively as possible. “I observed that it looks like you could use some help with cooking. What do you think, Mom?” Always avoid conflict. If parents are insistent that they’re not ready, stop there. It has to be everyone’s idea.
Gently maintain communication
“This is not something anyone should ever push,” agrees Amy D’Aprix, a gerontological social worker who has counselled people in late-life transitions for over 30 years. A better stance is to say, “It’s good to just know our options, so if things change in the future, we know what they are.”
Parents and loved ones will sympathise if it's about children’s peace of mind. Frame it like this: “It would give me peace to just know that you can get the care and support you need all the way through your life.” Touring options can then be focused on just confirming that, casually, even as older loved ones get exposed to what’s out there.
“The main thing is engaging the loved one and having that conversation about their safety," suggests Karen Fraser. "Share your concern. Sometimes it’s a difficult decision on the part of your loved one to make that move. But have that conversation about your concern for their health and safety.”
The key is not to wait too long
“Don’t wait,” says Audrey Miller of ElderCaring.ca. She’s also helped hundreds of people resolve senior care questions over the past 18 years. “The best time to think about change is when you’re not in crisis,” she advises. Arm yourself with as much research as you can to offer loved ones practical support. Irwin recommends families start with ComfortLife.ca.
For Angelica Aguilera, "Comfort Life gave us a place where we could learn everything from an unbiased perspective." It takes time and patience to research options in-depth through tours and visits. However, that's how you're going to arrive at the "good gut feeling" that you're looking for.
"Having The Ultimate Retirement Tour Checklist was important" for Angelica, because, as she says, "When you tour, you get distracted by other things that you come across. Not only does it give you the chance to ask what you already want to know, but it helped us think about other things to ask about [and, also, to] keep a balance, because it's a really difficult decision, and then touring can be overwhelming."

Planning ahead matters
A crisis or tipping point can come at any time. This may be:
- A stroke or other sudden ailment
- The onset of dementia
- A sudden passing of one spouse, leaving the other widowed
As Irwin says, though, "Help is there. Families should have the wisdom to ask for and accept it.” She’s witnessed many situations and seen them become win-win. Parents get the help they need, the adult child knows their loved one is getting care, and families can avoid the trauma of making mistakes.
Knowledge is power
When you go out and look with an open mind, you’ll be surprised— both at what’s out there and what you can afford. To Amy D’Aprix, retirement home living is an appropriate reward for parents. She adds:
If someone has lost their vigour for life, part of it is that there isn’t anything sparking them. This is an area where retirement homes are fabulous. Part of the beauty of retirement homes is that they have the key components that make our lives worth living. A big part of it is relationships, having people around us. Retirement residences have the benefit of privacy and independence plus a social network right there for you. That’s not always available in Canada, especially in the winter when it’s hard to get out. Retirement homes typically have so much going on: day trips, activities, volunteer things. There’s an opportunity to stay engaged, every day.
Make the transition smooth, giving yourself time
You’ll make the transition smoothest by taking your time, says Miller. Learn the lay of the land on your own terms. “Families often don’t understand basic differences between retirement homes and longterm care facilities,” for one example, she says. You’ll need to know about the different care levels and different lifestyle options and see them in action as you tour. It’s a project that “can be a full- time job,” she says. “Take time to talk to other families as to their experience,” she adds.
“You also need to manage your expectations as you search,” adds Irwin. “For some people, the thought of downsizing from 3,000 to 400 square feet can stop them in their tracks,” she says. But few residents in communities comment on the size of their suite, and many of them live in studio apartments. This is because communities offer so many activities and so much shared space that your suite becomes an afterthought, but also a welcomingly comfortable place. You sleep there and it’s your private space, but there is so much more to enjoy outside. Your “living space” is, in reality, much larger than it has ever has been anywhere else.
Finally, you need a long-term vision and to be prepared for changing needs. If you plan the move long ahead, and you have investments or savings in place, you can be prepared for different scenarios. Many of today’s seniors live in homes where they possess more equity than they ever dreamed of, so it’s more affordable for more people. Communities are equipped to care for those with increasing care needs. You’ll learn more about how retirement homes make the transition smooth on page 36.
No one should ever be pushed into doing something they don’t want to. But there is the reality of things. And the reality in today’s retirement homes is that many people are living wonderfully well. They feel very independent and free there. They’re good people, in a place that’s good to—and for—them. They want to tell you to do it—make the move sooner rather than later.
