“I’m so proud of the way everyone has come forward this year” says Hilda Anderson, 93, of Holland Gardens, “managers, staff, all of the people here.” From the sounds of it, you might think she was the appreciative owner of this stylish retirement community in the town of Bradford, Ontario. She’s not, of course -- it’s part of Verve Senior Living. Still, there’s a sense of ownership apparent in her words and in the way she too has come forward to help others. “I like to go around, talking to all the people here, at a distance of course. And every day it’s wonderful to see their faces light up.” Reaching out to others is just part of creating a good community for Hilda.
2020 has been a year of people “making the best of things,” but some settings foster this better than others. Retirement homes like Hilda’s offer many exceptional examples of “prosocial behaviour” in the words of social science researcher Summer Allen. Here, people go above and beyond to “make things best for us and go that extra mile for the people here,” she says. Hilda sees herself as part of this by “helping the people around me.”
Allen is a leading researcher in the science of generosity, interested in the way simple “acts of giving and helping” make lives better for people. “The Science of Generosity” is, in fact, the name of a report she has authored under the auspices of The Greater Good Science Centre (GGSC) at Berkeley University. In it, she outlines growing evidence that “humans are biologically wired for generosity.” Acting generously activates reward pathways in the mind, giving us an endorphin rush similar to how we feel in the midst of passion or eating. That’s just one benefit we receive from being generous.
One of the more prosaic insights of the study is that it’s easiest to be generous when you “feel more connected to others.” Settings like retirement homes foster generosity. In Hilda’s case, she participates in a cycle of generosity and gratitude. There are more examples of this from across the country. There seems to be unique potential in communities populated by wise elders who understand the value of giving back.
Take for example, George Markow, 99, of The Roxborough Retirement Residence. He set out in early summer to walk 100 kilometers, with the goal of raising $100,000 for COVID-19 research. The 99 year old walked all that distance aided by a rollator, lapping the courtyard of his Newmarket retirement home.
Markow was only the latest of several centenarians who took up charitable causes, with great results. In May, John Hillman, 101, completed 101 laps around his Oak Bay retirement home, exceeding his goal to raise $100,000 for Save the Children Canada. In June, Invermere BC’s Jim Ashworth, also 101, walked 101 blocks for the local food bank. All were inspired by Tom Moore of the UK, who, earlier this year, raised more than £33 million ($57 million CA) for Britain’s National Health Service by walking laps of his garden. Moore, too, is 101. He’s since been knighted.
Why did these seniors go out of their way in this manner? George Markow might speak for all of them when he puts it simply, “I want to do something positive,” as he told Global News. Daughter Susan Perkins says he’s just a thankful person.
Gratitude and generosity in many forms
Of course, acts of gratitude and generosity don’t need to make the nightly news to qualify as prosocial. For example, in Delmanor Glen Abbey in Oakville, Myrtle Tovell received a birthday gift from her granddaughter, hand-painted “love stones” with the messages “smile” and “hope.” In gratitude, she paid it forward, painting her own rocks and leaving them in the gardens around the community. It was an opportunity to create similar moments of cheer for others around her.
The staff have been amazing. They go out of their way to be positive and helpful.
When Ben Nuttall-Smith moved into Vancouver’s Oceana PARC, in 2019, he discovered a crowd of new friends and fellow learners. He joined in the Carol Sing at Christmas, and began a workshop in memoir writing for seniors. He was impressed by how “the super-friendly staff [appeared] to know every one [personally].” Connections he made were a boon to him when the pandemic hit. A former teacher, prolific writer, and Past President of the Federation of British Columbia Writers, he knows the value of sharing. He did just that by praising the “amazing staff” in a local paper, Peace Arch News. “[They] look after us so well,” he wrote. “We have zero transmissions of coronavirus. I consider myself most fortunate to be living here.”
Allen’s report on “The Science of Generosity” cites a wealth of evidence that humans are, in fact, “a generous species.” That assertion runs contrary to “conventional wisdom that holds we are self-interested at heart.” But there is indeed a wealth of evidence that giving of oneself improves self-esteem and relationships with others, reduces job burnout, makes us happier, and can even help us live longer. “Indeed,” she says, “some theorists have suggested that altruistic behavior was necessary for creating [social systems] that [have] allowed humans to thrive.”
In other words, we rise above mere survival when we think of others, and we rise higher together. Generosity, people going above and beyond the call of duty to make things better for others, lifts everyone. Let’s remember a positive context for a word so overused this year: kindness is also infectious. What we see in retirement communities like those noted above, is that people aren’t merely getting through things, this year. They’re growing together more deeply.
“All in this together”
Across the country this year, communities like those have pulled together in a spirit of “we’re all in this together.” Even as residents remained in social isolation during the early lockdown, or kept social distance in common areas, there were exclusive opportunities to reach across that distance. Communities grew deeper bonds, even while staff and residents protected each other from the virus.
Many communities benefit from a leader in largesse, someone especially good at spreading kindness, let’s say. At the Village of Wentworth Heights in Hamilton, that’s Anne Whittle, Head Resident Ambassador. She’s always made a name for herself as the go-to person for connecting people. “With COVID-19,” her days have changed, she admits, “but only a little. I still keep myself busy by spreading joy and positivity. There are always new people to meet.” You’ll often find her “chatting with neighbours or welcoming new residents who are naturally anxious, moving during this difficult time.” For her, these “unique times” offer unique opportunities in a community united in caring for—and about—each other.
Heartwarming generosity was uniquely typified by Makhena Guérin, a Resident Specialist (RS) at Symphony Senior Living Orleans. It was always her job to serve food and “help residents with whatever care they need,” she says. However, typical of someone in her role, she has a passion for caring, taking joy in “the connection I have with residents,” as she told the CBC’s Heather Hiscox.
In the early days of the pandemic, the 19 year old faced a difficult choice. Her mom suffers from an autoimmune disease, so living at home was no longer tenable due to the dangers of virus transmission. Guérin, though, knew that she “had to go to work” and made the remarkable decision to move there. “I talked to my boss and [we] made it happen,” she said in early May.
I want [everyone] to feel as happy as I do! You’ll find me delivering mail, chatting with my neighbours, or helping to welcome new residents ... There are always new people to meet.
Living round-the-clock inside the community, she had more time to volunteer, “just going into the residents’ room, chatting with them, spending some time with them.” Many of them had no family visits during the lockdown, of course. She also danced traditional hoop dances, a “medicinal” or healing ceremony, for seniors there.
A cycle of generosity is apparent in many other communities and care companies. Bria Communities’ teams got together in May, to send a gift of hot soup to a local not-for-profit long term care centre hit hard by the outbreak. Staff from Magnolia Gardens and Sunridge Gardens, both in Langley, personally delivered 100 individually packed bowls of soup.
Also in May, major senior living companies across Canada, including Revera, Extendicare and others, banded together to establish a Senior Living CaRES fund, to provide emergency funding for employees “experiencing hardship and extraordinary circumstances” due to the pandemic. The fund will provide a one-time financial assistance grant of up to $10,000 to workers in the senior living sector.
Combating loneliness
All these gestures, big and small, exemplify people taking an opportunity to reach out, to stretch themselves in new ways. Those who are alone or isolated, though, have limited chances to participate in this “prosocial behaviour,” of course. This year, those opportunities have dwindled, hampered additionally by the uncertainty many face.
Loneliness also comes with its own negative health effects. A 2018 survey by the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) showed that seniors who are lonely report lower levels of general health. In fact, this can be serious. Nova Scotia’s Centre on Aging published a study earlier this year putting health risks due to loneliness in stark terms: it demonstrably increases the risk of mortality. Finally, an international survey published in June puts other findings in the context of quarantine measures. “43% of [older adults now] report feeling lonely,” writes Bei Wu. Increased social isolation is “likely to become a major risk factor that affects older adults’ health outcomes.”
In a retirement community, though, bountiful social opportunities mean there are simply more ways to make the best of things. Myrtle Tovell took an opportunity to extend generosity forward to others in her community. She started on her own project of Zen-like work of rock painting, placing them around the Delmanor Glen Abbey community. She wanted the hundreds of peers to share in the connection, as she “paid it forward.”
Ben Nuttall-Smith cherishes the opportunities possible only by living in a community like Oceana PARC. He’s part of lively fitness classes, continues teaching, and cheerfully greets people in the hallways. His advice is to “Spread your happiness to all.”
Generously spreading her happiness to as many people as she can, Hilda Anderson, will tell you, tongue-in-cheek, “I love everyone here, I love all the old people. And I’m one of them!” She relishes her role as ambassador at Holland Gardens. “When new people come in, they sometimes have a hard time because everything is new to them. They’re the ones I like to help,” she says. “I think they should be shown that they’re wanted and that they’re cared for.”
That’s the kind of person you meet and live with in a retirement community. In retirement communities across Canada, people will tell you, “there are so many good people here.”
In wording that now seems ironic (though still fitting), Summer Allen says that generosity is indeed “socially contagious.” It propagates within social networks, among peers. Generous hearts are all around you in retirement communities like those noted above. Surrounded by others, good friends or friends-to-be, you benefit from their generosity, and deepen it within yourself as well. Seeing the best in others, you’ll find your own best self.
