Respite care stays
This kind of retirement home short stay primarily has caregivers in mind. When a caregiver needs a break or a vacation, retirement homes offer a temporary stay in a suite that in many cases is well-appointed. Retirement homes surround seniors with people their own age and there is care staff on hand to attend to the needs of the senior. Convalescent care stays
Retirement homes are an ideal place for anyone in their 50s or older who is recovering from surgery. Also called a recovery or recuperative stay, convalescent care stays are ideal for anyone recovering from knee or hip surgery (or any injury or illness). A retirement home has care staff on hand to attend to your needs, you have a comfortable, spacious suite, and you’re surrounded by people their own age. You may even want to join in on the activities and consider this a trial stay. It's better than recovering at home alone or asking a family member to provide care for you.

Trial stays
This is a chance to "try out" retirement living before committing. Retirement homes typically recommend a two week stay, allowing you to get a full taste of life in the community. It’s ideal for seniors who are attached to a beloved family home, with its memories and familiarity, opening them up to possibilities. Join activities, try out the amenities, sample the dining, and start to imagine how your life would change for the better if you moved.

Guest stays
This is ideal for friends or family from out of town who are connected to someone in the retirement home. This is charged sometimes on a per-night, more often on a per-week basis (many will have a minimal stay required). Family members and friends who take a guest stay at retirement homes are often amazed at how much fun and joy there is in the average retirement home. Todd was one family member who partook of a guest stay like this and summarized his experience as simply “fabulous.”
Interim or transitional care stays
In Ontario seniors who are currently in hospital but require long-term placement in a long-term care home may apply for an interim stay in a retirement home.
