Benefits for both caregivers and those with dementia
The option of a short stay in a local seniors' care home is an important option that many caregivers may not be aware of. In the province of Ontario, you can avail yourself of 60 days in a row, and a total of 90 days per calendar year, funded in part by the government. You can contact your local Community Care Access Centre to learn about your eligibility. Homes listed on this page offer superior care services for those suffering from Alzheimer's and other dementias, and a short stay here can offer critically important help to families. The alleviation of caregiver stress benefits everyone, including both the caregiver and the elderly dementia patient. Even if you don't qualify for a government-subsidies or have used up your 90 day maximum, some families still choose to avail themselves of a respite care stay in an emergency.
Short stays can be anywhere from 24 hours (if you want an overnight vacation) up to 60 days, should you need an extended break for any reason. Your loved one will receive 24 hour nursing care and, as described in the services offered by each home, help with any or all activities of daily living (ADLs). This allows you a break from extended or even round-the-clock caregiving (even vacation). The room to breathe makes you a better caregiver, when your loved one is returned to your care full time.
Costs of a short stay for dementia sufferers
In the province of Ontario, the cost of a short stay is commensurate with fees paid for long term care (approximately $36 per day, as of 2016). Care is funded and provided by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
Using home care services as a respite
Home care services can be hired in to offer respite for caregivers who may be suffering from fatigue, or who want a vacation or other break. Hiring in home care services can "spell off" caregivers during the week, and families can rest assured knowing that their loved one is in the hands of professional help.
In Ontario, this is a service offered by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and is coordinated through your Local Health Integration Network. If you are eligible, you can receive this service from a home care services provider, based on their fees.
