Residential care facilities defined
In general, the term residential care facility is not widely used in the Canadian retirement home industry. However, it’s understood as any form of permanent housing for people needing minimal personal assistance. In any residential care facility (as above) residents share dining and living rooms, and may even share rooms or suites, although for the most part your room is your private space. Homes listed above fit this bill. Residential care finds its truest form in house-like settings where people can get care administered by professional care staff.
Donna, the administrator of Meadowlands Retirement in Ancaster, puts it this way: “people may be struggling with the upkeep of their home but when they live here, they’re still independent and they can still go out, and if they need care with basic things we can help them with that.”
The options within a typical residence vary, but will fall under defined healthcare needs. The simplest, most common are as follows:
Help with regular housekeeping and meals. Many older people have back issues or other health concerns that restrict their ability to keep up with simple household chores like cleaning and meal preparation. When this form of personal care falls by the wayside, it can lead to other health issues.
For example, Yvonne’s mom could no longer go up and down the stairs in her old home, so she neglected laundry. (This led to bedsores, as Yvonne found alarming.) In addition, as her mother lived alone, meal preparation was also a daily inconvenience; her mother was thus underweight as she was no longer preparing healthy meals for herself. Neglect of these simple everyday household tasks, and the care provided for that in a retirement residence helped make her mom’s life much better. She needed residential care, where she could truly be more independent than she was.
There are two other areas of care covered by most homes listed above:
Medication administration is one other routine health care need that may be available for a fee in independent living retirement homes.
Assistance with bathing may be available in some independent living communities listed above, but consult with the profiles linked, to see what care is available in the independent seniors’ residences linked to.
The availability of care in typical retirement suites should not be assumed in a retirement home, of course. That is, in some communities, you may need to move to a specialized assisted living section as soon as you require any care. Although an increasing number of retirement homes offer flexibility, it’s not something to assume.
Assisted living residential care
All of the above care services are included in communities with assisted living, with the added availability of the following:
- Assistance with transferring. Some communities are restricted in their ability to offer this. For example, if the transfer requires two people, they may not be able to offer this health care option.
- Toileting or incontinence care is available at most assisted living communities, but consult with profiles linked to above, to confirm.
- Many assisted living communities offer support for a variety of ailments, including cancer care, diabetes, kidney problems, Huntington’s Disease, stroke and others.
More options that may be called residential care:
Houses in a bungalow community where you can hire in home care. Bungalow communities are ideal residences for many seniors. Here, you can hire in home care services as needed. Some communities linked to have care services available onsite.
Dementia care with residential style interiors. Many new memory care communities de-institutionalize settings, creating an environment that’s more comforting and home-like. These residential style interiors help reduce disorientation and other effects felt by people suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia. Long-term care homes offer residence to people with significant care requirements. In general, people go on a waiting list in order to get a placement in long-term care, which is administered by provincial government bodies in Canada. In Nova Scotia, for example, residential care facilities are discussed in the context of long term care.
