Ernie is one senior renter in a B.C. retirement home, who particularly enjoys his fitness classes. "Before I moved into this retirement home, I hadn't been to a gym in at least ten years," he says. "Now, I've joined a fitness class with a wonderful instructor who has helped me lose weight and get in better shape. Fitness helped make the transition from my old home to this retirement home so much easier."
Seniors in British Columbia prefer renting which foregoes the hassles of home ownership. Retirement community rentals cover room and board, maintenance (that might include light housekeeping), multiple services, and use of the residence’s amenities. In addition, renting provides extra protection and rights through the B.C. Residential Tenancy Act (RTA). The RTA is a very tenant-friendly piece of legislation that makes rentals quite attractive.
Governance of rentals and senior living in BC
The B.C. Tenant Resource and Advisory Centre offers advice and resources for renters in BC, covering senior rentals as well. British Columbia's retirement homes must also adhere to stringent provincial guidelines. Many of the province's senior communities are also members of the B.C. Seniors Living Association (BCSLA). BCSLA member homes join voluntary in an effort to learn about and offer renters the most innovative and effective services. Members of the BCSLA are known to exceed provincially mandated standards.
Industry experts suggest that after you sign a lease, you should also purchase rental insurance. It is relatively inexpensive and protects you from any emergencies that may occur in your unit.
