How to find the best seniors apartment for you
Looking for an apartment for a senior is not very different from looking for an apartment for anyone. Here's a primer or reminder of what to think about:
- Location, location, location: how convenient is the apartment for all the things you (or your senior parent) need to do in an average day, week or month?
- Be choosy: make a long list, then make a short list that you narrow down to the one you want. Making a decision to move - even to an apartment and especially as a senior - should be treated as a critical decision.
- Research: learn all you can about the area, about the history of the apartment or retirement home into which you are thinking of moving.
- Ask and learn: get references from other seniors who have rented there or elsewhere. Look online to see if you can find reviews of the seniors' apartment in which you are interested. Ask the residence if they have someone who will recommend their apartments.
- Visit numerous times: make sure that your first impression was right or take a second look at that place that you were not immediately completely in love with.

Pros and cons of senior living apartments
People in their senior years may find it hard to move. Many people want to stay where they are in a home they love and may even put it bluntly: "I want to stay here ‘til the end." It’s difficult to make a change but once you get over the resistance, the positives are many.
Here are the advantages we have heard from people who have moved:
Be surprised by how you feel in a new environment. Many people who go out and look at seniors' apartment options are surprised by how bright and cheerful some places are. They recognize right away that these bright interiors would have a positive effect on them every day. You feel happier when you are in bright, new surroundings.
Be surprised by the advantages of community. Bill moved into a senior living apartment building in central Ontario, and he’s very happy with the fact that he always has someone to sit and eat with. "When I was living on my own," he told us, "I lost over 70 pounds in 6 months because I just wasn’t eating right. Here, they really know what they’re doing. I feel so much better every day." He has a group of friends who all truly appreciate each other. "We get along great and every time we go out together, it works out great."
Be surprised by what you can afford. Many people are set on not moving based on a nebulous idea that good quality retirement living is very expensive. However, when people do the actual math, they find that their cost of living alone is higher than they realize.
