My mom loves living at Sorrento Retirement Residence. The staff make her feel special and are always very kind and thoughtful. There are lots of fun activities to choose from and she really enjoys the meals. She also loves being able to see the doctor, get her teeth cleaned and nails done all in the spa area. It’s super convenient.
The only changes we would recommend would be increasing the number of cleaning staff to accommodate the building being almost full and reducing the price for family members to dine in the dining room. The price was raised to be quite high and as a result, we don’t dine as often as we used to with my mom. When my mom first moved in, it was a flat price for guests to have a meal that included 3 courses and a drink. Now it only includes the main meal. Appetizers, dessert, and drinks for guests are extra.
Building, amenities & suites
(4)
My mom thinks her suite is great - it has large doorways to accommodate her walker, an elevated toilet, and vinyl flooring except in her bedroom (which it would be nice if it was vinyl as well). The layout of her suite is perfect for her and she loves it.
The decor in the common areas is beautiful. However, the flooring through out the building needs to be cleaned more often including the elevator, laundry rooms and garbage disposal area. The carpets in the hallways get dirty very quickly.
Staff
(5)
The quality of the staff is excellent. A couple of times when my mom missed an event/activity the recreation staff came to her room to bring her the treats that she missed which made her feel so special and super happy. The staff are truly amazing.
The maintenance and cleaning staff are fantastic - they just need more people.
Residents and community life
(5)
My mom always says “everyone is so nice to me” - when speaking of the other residents. She has made a number of new friends and she feels like everyone is very welcoming.
We are at the residence almost daily to visit my mom and agree that there is a wonderful culture at Sorrento.
Activities and services
(5)
Sorrento offers lots of activities - exercise classes, special celebrations which are very well done, cooking demonstrations, etc… My mom loved the captain’s lunch and loves getting her nails done, and participating in special events like the firefighters' bbq. She also loves it when Sorrento brings in vendors to sell stuff like jewelry or shoes.
Care and medical attention
(5)
We are very happy with the care provided by the nurses and PSWs. One time she wasn’t feeling well at dinner and a nurse came and took her blood pressure and it was elevated. After she went back to her room they continued to monitor her to ensure she was fine.
Food and drink
(4.5)
My mom enjoys the food at Sorrento. She especially likes the desserts. Sorrento has their own pastry chef who makes delicious desserts. As family, we also enjoy dining in the dining room. The decor is beautiful, the wait staff are super nice and the food is good.
Moving in
(4.5)
Moving in went as smoothly as possible and for the first couple of days my mom was escorted to her meals by the PSWs, which was extremely helpful as she was very nervous to go down for meals and activities. She is now fully settled in and very happy.
