You'll love it at Taunton Mills if you miss that old small town feeling of yesteryear, along with the easy friendships that setting fostered. There's also a wide variety of activities to choose from here, including movie nights, horseshoes, exercising, just hanging out on the patio, or outings. Onsite pampering includes a beauty salon and barber shop.
It lives up to the title of village. The layout of the building follows very much from the idea of a small town, its central town square holding a number of "shops" to browse and meet up with friends. Places you'll find in the town centre (a commons area) include a library, a theatre, a café, a general store, and a pub. Unlike most Ontario towns, though, there's never any cold weather or rain. It's an ideal home.
Levels of care available in the Village of Taunton Mills range from independent to assisted living. Assistance in Schlegel Villages does not apply a cookie-cutter approach, however. The individual needs of residents are looked at, and care offered is resident-centred. The attitude of staff here is not that seniors live where the staff works, but "we work in your home."
We've collected reviews and testimonials from around the web that are relevant to you: those from residents and their loved ones.
This place is very efficient. I'm new to the area and have used it twice, and both times it took me approximately 5 minutes to get in and get out. I'm super happy with the service here.
Have nothing but great things to say about The Village of Taunton Mills. My parents moved there 9 months ago. The staff was tremendous in assisting us through several moves required as a result of health issues that arose. Special kudos to everyone in the marketing department with extra special kudos going to Amanda Sturgeon who has been there for us every step of the way 😃
Just over a year ago (May 2024), with the help of another with whom I share responsibility for personal care, we moved a dear friend into Taunton Mills Retirement Home after looking at several such places. It turns out we were exceedingly fortunate.
The place is terrific. There is a cafe in the very large lobby area where you can find coffee or tea (often a cookie or a muffin too!) and spend some time chatting or collecting your thoughts around a visit. There is a lovely sitting area adjacent to a fish pond, which is occasionally visited by a Great Blue Heron. Wonderful food, a hair salon, billiards table, so much more. Frankly, it doesn't look like a "home" of any sort. What you cannot determine when checking out a place like this is the quality of the staff and the care your loved one will receive. I write this review primarily because of the staff. In our case, the people in charge seem to work under the direction of Ms. Amanda Sturgeon, "neighbourhood coordinator," who often finishes her communications with us with a "Thank you for your understanding," when the thanks should go entirely in the other direction. Our friend has gone down hill quickly recently and her behaviour is scarcely believable. The burden and nature of the care M. now requires is beyond anything I would expect. This review is the smallest of thank yous for work way over and above.
Staff are always so friendly and helpful. I appreciate all that they do to assist my mother at this stage of her life.
Thank you so much for bending over backwards on behalf of the Dodds’. You guys are fantastic!
My mom really enjoys it here at Taunton Mills - so many activities, the staff is so friendly, and always looking out for the elderly. I especially want to shout out to Amy- so so friendly and very loving and kind to all the residents - she is amazing.
Texas Bobby, my Dad, who originally lived in Whitby before moving to the States, has come home to Whitby and now lives at Taunton Mills. Taunton Mills is a welcoming retirement home that promotes community living and focuses on encouraging life purpose for the many residents, as well as providing top-notch health care. Bobby lives independently with supportive care while living through the stages of Alzheimer’s. He is understood and supported by staff.
Rosemary and Sharon are exceptional in their role, they were patient, followed up with me over the last 6 years while we planned a smooth transition to living at Taunton Mills. I highly recommend them! Amanda, Amy and Diane supporting staff are caring, kind and gentle with their approach with seniors. The nursing and PCAs are well trained, reliable and very good at their jobs.
We have the utmost confidence in the care my Dad receives. Alzheimer’s is a challenging disease with daily struggles that need kind understanding people as staff to care for them. Taunton Mills is that residence!
We had to move our parents into TM in May due to complex medical issues. Did we do the right thing? We were very concerned about making this decision on their behalf. It has been 2 months now and we feel that this was very much the right decision for our parents. They both have dementia. They feel safe and secure there. The staff are very patient and kind and have formed good relationships with them. Dad loves the food! It can be tricky to find meaningful activities that people with dementia can engage in, but the staff are currently working with us to see how we can improve their quality of life. Any questions or concerns that we have had have been handled in a timely manner by our co-ordinator Alysha Holland. This transition was incredibly stressful for everyone in our family and I'm glad that TM was there to make it as seamless as possible.
My dad received fabulous care from all the staff - especially his Taunton Mills family in the Claremont Neighbourhood. The lines of communication were always open and we knew of any and all issues - and that gave us peace of mind. Thank you for everything you did for him including making him as comfortable as possible in his last days. And thank you for always making sure he got his "ice cream."
Our mother has been a retirement resident for 14 years and lived in an independent suite on the 6th floor of the north building for all of those years. She recently had a fall and she decided to move to the first floor. The help and guidance that we received from the staff was so amazing. They were all so very kind and considerate and answered all of our questions, always returning phone calls and doing whatever they could to make the move seamless. The suite was all set up for our mother upon her return. She was greeted by many staff members and was made to feel so welcome. We are very thankful for all of the assistance.
My parents moved into an Independent Living Suite in the South Tower back in 2020; my Mom was moved into the Dryden neighbourhood in long-term-care in December of 2021 due to her Alzheimer's. I give credit to the staff as I spent a fair bit of time there and I had the opportunity to see how challenging it could be - for the most part they were all great. My Mom became ill in February 2023 and ended up in palliative care in her room, and was treated with kindness and compassion during her final days. I give special credit to Diane McLean - the neighbourhood coordinator of Dryden as she was always there when we needed her which meant more than she could know.
The staff here are amazing. [My grandma] has lived here for years now with dementia. They give her outstanding care and you can easily see the love that they have for all of the residents here. By far the best retirement home I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. If I could give them 6 stars, I would. ❤❤❤❤
They are wonderful my husband got excellent care. Staff are the best.
Thanks for the great service and warm hearts for my uncle Bernard [who passed away peacefully here]. I appreciate it.
Thank you for taking such great care of my Gram through this horrible pandemic.
My Dad, Alan Cobel, lived on the retirement side from March 2016-July 17, 2019. He loved it here! The staff are exceptional! They work hard and we greatly appreciated it! There was always something going on for entertainment and friends to be made.
My mother was in three retirement homes over the past year and [she now has a home] in the Long Term Care Facility on the Perry Wing. Everyday is special here. [Everyone here is] empathetic, professional, knowledgeable and friendly ... They all work together so well. I am thoroughly impressed and would recommend the Village Of Taunton Mills to everyone.
This is a great place to live. I visit a few times a month and am impressed every time. The residents are happy, you can tell.
When you have friends who you chat, laugh with, talk with... that is true happiness.
