Advantages of Edmonton apartment living

People who have been widowed or are otherwise single find apartment living ideal. It creates a fuller life. Look at the benefits:

Accessibility and comfort designed for you. You’ll find heated flooring, grab bars on the walls, elevators, and other accessibility features in a building tailored to seniors. There’ll be secure doors, staff on hand, emergency call systems in some cases, and no tripping hazards. Life will be easier, more comfortable, and safer.

It’s the right-sized space for seniors living alone. Why live in a place with stairs, and too many rooms to keep clean? Move into a place that’s just right for who you are now.

Surrounded by people your age. Companionship will be easy to find. You’ll make friends. You won’t hear children crying or loud music from neighbours. All the people will have time for you. Pass them in the hallway, and you’ll likely always find things to chat about.

Staff keep an eye out for you and assure your safety. Staff in these buildings will look out for you. Family members will know you’re safe. They won’t worry about you falling or anything else. The staff even contribute to the friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

There will be activities tailored for you. Join in easy card games or fun outings. You might pay to participate in some activities, but the company will make it doubly worth it.

Take charge of your life. You’ve always dealt with things head-on. Do that again by making it a decision to move into a seniors’ building. It’ll be your choice and no one else’s.

Seven tips for apartment-hunting seniors

1. Location, of course! Check out buildings near the things you like to do or the things you want to learn more about. Ideally, it should have “everything at hand” or “within walking distance” as many other seniors have ideally found.

2. Talk to people in the building. How do they like it? What are their complaints? Get different perspectives, though. Find someone you resonate with and hear what they have to say.

3. Visit at different times of the day. First impressions are important but they can also lie. Visit at another time of day, and you might see things from a different angle. That goes either way. If a place doesn’t impress you the first time, keep an open mind.

4. Take your significant other or one of your kids with you. They’ll see things you don’t. They’ll be a good sounding board for you.

5. Peak into all the dark corners. If someone is touring you around the building, be sure to check out the things they aren’t necessarily showing you.

6. Look for recent updates or plans for that. Buildings should be accessible and have all the latest safety features, or as many of them as you anticipate needing.

7. Consider transportation concerns. As with location, getting to and from home will impact your experience. Some seniors’ buildings listed above have a shuttle service. If you have your own vehicle, ask what the parking regulations are for residents and guests. Is there a public transit stop nearby?
