How respite care works and a look at costs
Respite care in a York Region retirement residence costs start at about $100 a day. Higher-end retirement residences with fine amenities may charge more, or you may need to pay extra for some specific services.
In order to get respite care you need a good reason that qualifies. (A needed vacation is one reason listed by the Ontario government. After that, all you need is a health card.) Assessments are done through Home and Community Care Support Services.
If you qualify, care is covered by the government for respite care up to 60 days in a row and for 90 days during any calendar year. All you need to pay for is the room and board of the suite in the retirement home.
There are other ways to get relief:
Adult day programs feature activities tailored to seniors. Some government-run programs are free but likely have waiting lists. Privately run day programs for seniors are less likely to have wait lists and start around $30-$40 an hour up to $200 a day (or perhaps more).
You can also consider a York Region home care company. They offer targeted care, and fees start around $45 an hour.
Three benefits of respite care in a retirement home
1. Learn about techniques used by professional caregivers. Professional caregivers in a retirement home setting are trained in-depth in specific techniques and tactics for dealing with the behaviours associated with dementia. For example, gentle persuasion is just one example of a variety of ways care workers are trained to be patient with and anticipate responsive behaviours like acting out or repeating questions, etc.
2. Have peace of mind from the formal care-based setting. Many of the retirement homes linked above are pleasantly luxurious. Your loved one may be able to dip into the pool there. Not only are there PSWs, there will be nurses and a doctor on call. There are medical services in the building along with other health services.
3. You get an inside peak at retirement homes. If your loved one has a progressive disease, you may be thinking about a retirement home in the future. A respite care stay can then be treated as a trial stay where you and your loved one can view the community life, care staff, food, and amenities firsthand.
